Practise with a faithful replica of the on-screen calculator used in the FRV Written Selection Test numeracy section. It follows order of operations (BODMAS): which is different from most pocket calculators. Familiarise yourself before test day.
Faithful replica of the ACER on-screen calculator used in the FRV WST.
Follows BODMAS order of operations.
Unlike a basic left-to-right pocket calculator, this calculator performs multiplication and division before addition and subtraction. This is mathematically correct but catches many students off guard on test day.
17.50+19.75×3Multiplication happens first: result is NOT 111.75
(17.50+19.75)×3Brackets force addition first
85×1.1Add 10% GST to $85
93.5÷1.1Divide by 1.1 to remove GST (not subtract 10%)
240×35÷10035% of 240
√(144)√144 = 12
Any time you want to force a specific order of operations, wrap the relevant part in brackets. The calculator handles nested brackets correctly.
After pressing =, the result is stored in Ans. Press Ans to use it in the next calculation: saves re-entering long numbers.
For problems requiring an intermediate result, press Mem Enter to store it, then Mem Recall to retrieve it later. Mem Clear resets the memory.
Pressing 35% converts 35 to 0.35. So 240 × 35% = 240 × 0.35 = 84. This is equivalent to typing 240 × 35 ÷ 100.
On the real test, the calculator closes automatically when you move to the next question. Any value in Ans is also cleared. Only Memory persists: but ACER advises against relying on this.
